Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI®)

Understanding Personality Types

Identifying, understanding and dealing with our differences and similarities is key to success in both our professional and personal lives.

ImageMyers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI®) is one of the most popular and respected personality type tools in the world.  It is a personality type tool which is based on research by the renowned psychologist Carl Jung.

Isabel Myers and her mother Katherine were fascinated by Jung’s theory of psychological types and recognized that the theory could have real world applications. During World War II, Myers and Briggs began researching and developing an indicator that could be utilized to help understand individual differences. By helping people understand themselves, Myers and Briggs believed that they could help people select occupations that were best suited to their personality types and lead healthier, happier lives.

The purpose of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) personality inventory is to make the theory of psychological types described by C. G. Jung understandable and useful in people’s lives.

MBTI Personality Preferences

The MBTI assessment helps you identify your natural preferences in four areas of personality:

  • How do you direct and receive energy
  • How do you take in information
  • How do you decide and come to conclusions
  • How do you approach the outside world

Your natural preferences in these four areas sort you into one of 16 distinct MBTI personality types. Understanding these types gives you objective insight that you can use to enhance your professional and personal relationships, as well as your direction, focus, and choices.

Understanding why people behave in certain ways can help team members appreciate personality differences in others and work with them rather than fight them and be frustrated.

Understanding difference is a real people skill.  Differences occur through cultural, physical and psychological factors. Having greater self awareness of your own personality preferences allows you to modify your approach when interacting with others in your team. This increases your chances of communicating more effectively and can lead to lower levels of frustration and conflict.
