Understanding how you communicate is key to your success

 

Transactional Analysis (TA) is a psychological theory

that helps explain why we think, act and feel the way we do.
 

Transactional Analysis (TA) promotes and improves communication

, enhances relations in the organization and organizational climate, which contributes to increased productivity.
 

The theoretical basis of TA is a development of Freudian theory

. To help people understand this, Dr. Eric Berne developed the P-A-C diagram with which a transaction can be graphically illustrated.
 

Transactional Analysis (TA) claims that we can better understand ourselves

by analyzing our transactions with the people closest to us. Transaction = conversation/interaction between two people.

What is important in the model is that every time we communicate, we communicate from an ego state.

When people communicate in the parent ego state, they are communicating from a position they learned from their parents. When people communicate in the child ego state, they are usually emotional and respond as they did as a child. In the adult ego state, people make an autonomous and thoughtful assessment of the situation in a nonprejudicial way.
 
With such an understanding, we can start to choose our communications. If we have no awareness of our ego state, we could respond inappropriately, which might lead to frustrated or unhealthy transactions.
