Conflict Management

All of us experience conflict.

Conflict is an intrinsic and inevitable aspect of social life and as human beings we experience it at many different levels. Conflict can create risks for staff that go beyond the norm and require additional skills to de-escalate or meet people’s needs. Developing these skills can give staff confidence to resolve difficult situations or provide positive behavioural support.

Conflict management is the principle that all conflicts cannot necessarily be resolved, but learning how to manage conflicts can decrease the odds of nonproductive escalation.

Organizational conflict arises when the goals, interests or values of different individuals or groups are incompatible and those individuals or groups block or thwart one another’s attempts to achieve their objective.

We argue with our partners, disagree with our friends, and sometimes even quarrel with other people at a hockey or football match. We experience it within ourselves, when we might be in two minds about a key decision we have to take, or maybe we’ve behaved in a way that was out of character and later found regretful, so we’re finding it difficult to reconcile our behaviour and our values.

The benefits of doing it right

About 80 percent of conflicts that people opt to resolve through mediation reach a successful outcome that meets the needs of both parties.

Among the benefits of mediation are:

  • Cost efficiency
  • Speed of resolution
  • Confidentiality
  • The relationship between the parties can continue
  • Empowerment

Unmanaged or poorly managed conflict in the workplace leads to reduced teamwork, cooperation, productivity and quality, as well as diminished employee commitment and morale. However, good conflict management skills can prevent these results.

Maxwell training will help your colleagues identify and reduce conflict and risk and influence a safe and positive outcome in a difficult situation.
